Sophia hits it on the head. In the past, that WAS who Richard Castle was. And it shows she is living in the past and doesn’t know who he is. Unfortunately, those attributes are what Beckett is afraid he still is, thus playing into her fear of taking a leap with him. 

Lets look at the descriptives:

Reckless - Castle has been reckless, but he has seen what his reckless behavior has done and done to people. Including putting people he loves in danger. 

Immature - lets face it, he is still a bit immature. But when he realized pushing Beckett to look back into her mother’s murder, caused everything to domino, and culminated in her being shot, he admitted what his one-sided goal did. 

Self-Centered - I think when he first started shadowing Beckett, he was self-centered. It was all about him, his need for new book research, and lets face it - a way to put Beckett as another notch on his bedpost. But his selfless actions, such as staying away from her for three months when she said she needed space, shows it isn’t about him anymore … Not to mention his willingness to forgive Beckett when she cut him loose for those three months to find herself, after she was shot.
